What is 420?
There are a ton of myths surrounding the development of 4/20 as a cannabis holiday. Some say that the day got its start based on song lyrics in the 70s, while others say that 420 is a police code for marijuana violations. Most agree, however, that the holiday is actually based on a code name for weed created by teenagers in San Rafael, California.
Legend has it that a group of friends knew of a cannabis plant that was located in the woods near their school. They agreed to meet up at the end of the day—at 4:20, to be exact—to smoke a bit of weed and head off into the wilderness in search of the mysterious, hidden pot plant. The group never found their plant, but they became close friends with members of the Grateful Dead—and soon, 420 became synonymous with weed in the Deadhead community. Shortly thereafter, the term was used in the magazine High Times, and the rest was history.
